Title: ABC2MIDI Multiple Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities
Severity: HIGH
Description:
abcMIDI is a suite of utilities for working with ABC and MIDI music files. It is used to convert to and from various formats including PS, ABC, and MIDI, while being able to perform certain operations and transformations on the resulting output files. abc2midi is one of the included utilities used to convert ABC files to MIDI files.
It is reported that abc2midi is susceptible to two stack buffer overflow vulnerabilities. These issues are due to a failure of the application to properly bounds check user-supplied data prior to copying it into fixed-size memory buffers.
Specifically, it is reported that the 'event_text()', and the 'event_specific()' functions, in the 'store.c' file, both contain stack buffers of 200 bytes. These functions improperly copy user-supplied input in to fixed-size buffers without proper bounds checking. This results in the possible overflowing of the buffers, and the overwriting of adjacent memory regions containing critical values allowing attackers to control the flow of execution.
These vulnerabilities allow remote attackers to alter the proper flow of execution of the application, potentially resulting in the execution of attacker-supplied machine code in the context of the application attempting to read malicious ABC files.
