Title: Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0 Converter Font Conversion Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0 Converter is used to convert Word 6.0 file formats to the WordPad file formats.
Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0 Converter (MSWRD632.WPC) is reported prone to a buffer overflow vulnerability. This vulnerability results from insufficient boundary checks performed by the application on a length tagged segment of a file before copying said data into an insufficient finite stack-based buffer. An attacker may exploit this issue to gain unauthorized access to a vulnerable computer in the context of the user running the application.
It is reported that this issue may be exploited when a maliciously crafted file is opened in Microsoft WordPad. The issue specifically arises in the ConvertForeignToRtf() function that supplies Font Conversion functionality for the application. The attacker must craft the file in a manner that supplies excessive data to the application, resulting in an overflow condition. The malicious file may be crafted to include replacement memory addresses and arbitrary code to be executed on the computer.
If a vulnerable user opens this file in WordPad, the application may crash and/or attacker-supplied arbitrary code may be executed in the context of the user.
It should be noted that an attacker can trigger this condition by using '.wri', '.rtf', and '.doc' file formats.
Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0 Converter is not enabled by default on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003. This issue does not pose a significant risk on Windows 98, 98 SE, and ME; it may only cause a denial of service condition in the application without the possibility of code execution.
