Title: Microsoft Windows WINS Name Value Handling Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
The Microsoft Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) allows the mapping of NetBIOS names to IP addresses and vice versa. WINS servers can allow users to browse for local resources on the network using computer names.
The WINS server contains a buffer-overflow vulnerability that can allow attackers to corrupt WINS process memory. The issue occurs because the software fails to perform sufficient boundary checks on computer 'name' data that is handled during a WINS transaction.
Presumably, when a superfluous computer 'name' value is transmitted to a vulnerable WINS server, the 'name' data will trigger memory corruption when it is copied into a fixed-size memory buffer. Since an attacker may control the contents of process memory, they may exploit this vulnerability to influence program execution flow.
Ultimately, a WINS client may exploit this issue remotely to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level privileges on a target WINS server. The service may be exposed via TCP/UDP port 42 by default, but the vendor has stated that other attack vectors may exist (though none are known at this time).
