Title: Citadel/UX Network Data Logging Remote Format String Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Citadel/UX is an open source BBS package for Linux, BSD, Solaris and other Unix systems. Citadel/UX stores data in a local database.

A remote format string vulnerability reportedly affects the network data logging functionality of Citadel/UX. This issue is due to a failure of the application to properly sanitize user-supplied input prior to passing it as the format specifier to a formatted printing function.

This issue presents itself when an attacker sends a maliciously crafted string containing format specifiers to TCP port 504 of the affected application. Apparently all data sent to this TCP port is logged using a 'syslog()' function call that is improperly implemented. This allows an attacker to gain control of the format string, allowing them to write to arbitrary process memory and gain control of execution flow.

The insecure call to the 'syslog()' function takes place in the 'lprintf()' function, which can be found in the 'sysdep.c' file.

A remote attacker may leverage this issue to write to arbitrary process memory, facilitating code execution. Any code execution would take place with superuser privileges.
