Title: Gentoo SETI@home EBuild Insecure Default Permissions Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

SETI@home is a client program designed to run on a computer when it is not in use. The client receives data from a central server, which it later analyzes in search of various information. It is available for a variety of platforms including Linux, Unix, and the Microsoft Windows operating system.

The Gentoo SETI@home eBuild package is reported prone to a weak default permissions vulnerability. It is reported that the application startup (init) scripts and binaries that are installed with the SETI@home eBuild package are installed with weak permissions that will allow unprivileged users to modify them.

This may lead to the execution of attacker-supplied code with superuser privileges. A local attacker may exploit this vulnerability to escalate privileges.

Affected Products:

  • Gentoo Linux
