Title: Hummingbird Connectivity INETD32 Privilege Escalation Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Hummingbird Connectivity is a suite of applications for Microsoft Windows operating systems designed to provide X Windows, NFS, and other Unix services. Inetd32 is a network super-server designed to provide on-demand network services.
Hummingbird Connectivity is reported prone to a privilege escalation vulnerability in its inetd32 application.
Specifically, the inetd32 application runs with 'Local System' privileges in order to bind to and listen on privileged TCP ports. The application listens on TCP ports and then spawns the configured application in order to handle each connection. The spawned applications inherit the 'Local System' privileges when executing.
Reportedly, regular users can configure the inetd32 process to execute arbitrary commands to handle new connections. Once a service is configured to execute a user-supplied executable, the user then connects to the configured TCP port. Inetd32 then spawns the process with 'Local System' privileges.
This vulnerability allows users with local interactive access to execute arbitrary applications with administrative privileges.
Version 7.1 and 9.0 are reported vulnerable to this issue. Other versions are also likely affected.
Affected Products:
- Hummingbird Connectivity 7.1.0
- Hummingbird Connectivity 9.0.0
