Title: ShixxNOTE 6.net Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
ShixxNOTE 6.net is a personal organizer and note-taking application for Microsoft Windows operating systems. It contains a multi-threaded server portion that is responsible for messaging between users on a network.
ShixxNOTE 6.net is reported susceptible to a remote buffer-overflow vulnerability. The application fails to properly perform boundary checks before copying user-supplied strings into finite process buffers.
Specifically, the application fails to properly bounds-check the field used to specify the font to use when sending messages between ShixxNOTE instances. Reportedly, if an attacker sends 1698 bytes of data in this field, a function return address will be overwritten, allowing the attacker to alter the application's normal flow of execution.
An attacker may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable computer with the privileges of the user running the vulnerable application.
