Title: RealNetworks RealOne Player And RealPlayer PNen3260.DLL Remote Integer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

RealNetworks RealPlayer and RealOne Player are media players that are available for various operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS. RealOne and RealPlayer contain support for SMIL 2.0. SMIL files contain information necessary to describe a multimedia presentation.

RealPlayer and RealOne Player are prone to a remote integer overflow vulnerability. It is reported that the vulnerability exists in the 'pnen3260.dll' linked library of both RealPlayer and RealOne Player for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS platforms. The 'pnen3260.dll' library is responsible for processing real-media '.rm' files.

This vulnerability presents itself due to a lack of sufficient sanity checks performed on length field integer values of the '.rm' file VIDORV30 data chunk. It is reported that a VIDORV30 data chunk length value of '0xFFFFFFF8 - 0xFFFFFFFF' will trigger the vulnerability. This will result in the allocation of a chunk of heap-based memory that is insufficient to contain data copied from the malicious media file. It is conjectured that the subsequent copy of data into this insufficient chunk will result in an exception, however it is reported that calling the malicious media file from a SMIL file can be used to handle this initial exception, and ultimately trigger an overflow of the affected buffer.

The overflow will cause the corruption of heap-based memory management structures that reside adjacent to the affected chunk. Ultimately this may permit an attacker to write to an arbitrary location in the memory of the active process and in doing so control execution flow.

A remote attacker may therefore exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary attacker-supplied instructions in the context of a user that is running a vulnerable version of the software.

It should be noted that the discoverer of this vulnerability has stated that RealPlayer 8 for Microsoft Windows platforms, RealPlayer 10 Beta and RealOne Player for Apple Mac platforms, and Linux RealPlayer 10 and Helix Player for Linux platforms may only be exploited through local playback of a malicious file. It is not known whether this implies that other affected versions may be exploited exclusively through remote playback or not.

This issue was originally described in BID 11273 (RealNetworks RealOne Player And RealPlayer Remote Vulnerabilities) and is now being assigned its own BID.
