Title: Mozilla/Firefox Browsers Unauthorized Clipboard Contents Disclosure

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Mozilla and Firefox are open source web browsers available for a number of platforms, including Microsoft Windows and most UNIX/Linux operating systems.

A vulnerability is reported in Mozilla and Firefox browsers that could permit a remote site to gain access to contents of the client user's clipboard.

This vulnerability exists because certain unsafe scripting operations are permitted on TextAreas. Specifically, KeyEvents can be activated using JavaScript, 'initKeyEvent' methods. Unsafe KeyEvents can be invoked and are interpreted as safe by the vulnerable browser, for example (CTRL-Insert). This can lead to the disclosure of clipboard contents and malicious Web sites having the ability to write to a users clipboard.

The impact of exploitation depends entirely on what sort of information is stored in the user's clipboard at the time of exploitation, though it is common for user's to copy various credentials into their clipboard. It should be noted that there will not be any context for the disclosed clipboard contents so the attacker will have to make assumptions as to whether the information is of a sensitive nature or not.

**Update: It is reported that this vulnerability also affects Netscape Navigator 7.2 for Microsoft Windows platforms; other versions might also be affected.
