Title: Apple PPPDialer Insecure Log File Creation Symbolic Link Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Apple PPPDialer is a utility that is distributed with the Apple Mac OSX platform, it is used to configure and connect point-to-point protocol connections.
The PPPDialer utility is reported to contain an insecure log file creation vulnerability. The result of this is that log files created by the application are created in a world writeable location. The filenames are also likely created using a predictable filename.
A local attacker may possibly exploit this vulnerability to execute symbolic link file overwrite attacks. The attacker may create a symbolic link that points to a target file, this symbolic link will use the same filename that the vulnerable utility uses when creating a log file. This may allow an attacker to overwrite arbitrary files with the privileges of a targeted user.
Privilege escalation may be possible using this method of attack, if the attacker can control the data that is being written to the target file.
