Title: SSLTelnetd Remote Syslog Format String Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

SSLTelentd is a utility that implements the telnet protocol over SSL; attempting to facilitate a secure telnet environment. It is available as a FreeBSD port.

Reportedly SSLTelnetd is affected by a remote format string vulnerability. This issue is due to an improper implementation of the 'syslog()' formatted string function.

The problem presents itself when the offending 'syslog()' function is called in the 'SSL_set_verify()' function implemented in the telnetd.c file. Apparently this issue is triggered when an authentication attempt fails; it is possible for an unauthenticated attacker to trigger the offending function call with attacker-specified content.

As a result of this issue, malicious log entries containing format specifiers will be interpreted literally when logs are written; this may result in attacker-specified memory being corrupted or disclosed, leading to arbitrary code execution.

This BID will be updated when more information becomes available.

This issue is reported to affect SSLtelnetd version 0.13-1, other versions are likely to be affected as well.

Linux Netkit netkit-telnet-ssl is affected by this issue as well.
