Title: SquirrelMail Email Header HTML Injection Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

SquirrelMail is a feature rich web mail application implemented in using PHP4. It is available for Linux and Unix based operating systems.

SquirrelMail is reported to be prone to an email header HTML injection vulnerability. This issue is due to a failure of the application to properly sanitize user-supplied email header strings.

The problem presents itself when an unsuspecting user views an email message containing malicious HTML and scrip code in the 'Content-Type' header. The offending header parameter is acquired by the application from a third party IMAP server. It is possible to inject HTML and script code into the application through the offending field as it is not sanitized.

It has been reported that successful exploitation depends on the IMAP server; It is possible to leverage this issue through all servers that follow the IMAP RFC specification.

An attacker can exploit this issue to gain access to an unsuspecting user's cookie based authentication credentials; disclosure of personal email is possible. Other attacks are also possible.
