Title: Microsoft Outlook 2003 Media File Script Execution Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Microsoft Outlook is reportedly prone to a media file script execution vulnerability. This issue is due to a design error that would allow for the execution of scripts located in media files regardless of security settings.
The problem presents itself when a malicious email is sent to an unsuspecting user. Upon viewing the malevolent email an attacker can have media file scripts executed in the context of the unsuspecting user.
Apparently when a rich text file or an OLE object has an embedded, malicious media file that includes malevolent script code, Windows Media Player will be invoked and the script will be run. This takes place regardless of the media player being set to disallow scripting in media files.
This issue might allow an attacker to execute arbitrary files on the affected computer. Leveraging other issues, such as the Microsoft Outlook 2003 Predictable File Location Weakness (BID 10307), it might be possible for an attacker to execute arbitrary, attacker-supplied code.
Affected Products:
- Microsoft Office 2003
