Title: Apple Mac OS X AppleFileServer Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Apple Mac OS X supports AppleShare, a proprietary network file sharing protocol. The AppleFileServer is a server that implements this protocol. AppleFileServer provides Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) services for Mac OS X and Mac OS X server. AFP is not enabled by default.
A vulnerability has been identified in the application that may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code in order to gain unauthorized access. This issue results from insufficient boundary checks performed by the application when processing user-supplied data.
The issue presents itself when the application receives a 'LoginExt' packet containing a malformed 'PathName' argument. The 'LoginExt' packets are used to authenticate to a host via the 'Cleartext Password User Authentication Method' (UAM). The packet contains the 'PathName' argument that specifies a one-byte value for the string type, a two-byte value for the string length, and the string itself. It has been reported that by a string of type AFPName (0x3) which is longer than the length specified in the packet will cause a stack based buffer to overflow and possibly result in sensitive memory addresses being over written. An attacker could then change the flow of execution to point to attacker-supplied memory addresses containing arbitrary code.
Successful exploitation of this issue may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the server resulting in root level compromise.
Apple Mac OS X 10.3.3 and prior are reported to be prone to this issue.
This issue was previously disclosed in a multiple BID 10268 (Apple OS X Multiple Unspecified Large Input Vulnerabilities), however, it is being assigned a new BID as a result of new information available.
