Title: Samsung SmartEther Switch Firmware Authentication Bypass Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Samsung SmartEther switch is an auto-negotiating switch that provides plug-and-play network switching. Some Samsung SmartEther switches are provided with a management command line interface, this can be accessed remotely or via a local serial connection.

When accessing a Samsung SmartEther switch, via the telnet service or serial connection, authentication is required and the user is presented with a logon screen. It has been reported that it is possible to bypass this authentication procedure. Specifically, if a user supplies the username "admin" and a password that consists of 16 alpha numeric or "!@#$%^&*" characters the authentication procedure will fail. It is reported that the issue occurs because the password entered at the logon screen is the maximum size for an entered password.

Expected behavior would be that the logon screen would deny entry if the password was not correct, however it is reported that the user will be granted access after an "error: Password not matched." message is displayed.

An attacker may potentially exploit this condition to, for example, modify static MAC address mapping and perhaps enable man-in-the-middle style attacks. Other attacks are certainly possible.

This vulnerability is reported to affect the Samsung SmartEther SS6215S switch; other models that are running the affected firmware are also likely affected.

Affected Products:

  • Samsung SmartEther SS6215S Switch 0.0.0
