Making Responsible Choices in Our Operations

Juniper Networks strives for excellence in global environmental, health, safety, and security management. Our management systems provide the framework to help identify and minimize potential hazards, risks, or anything that negatively affects our employees, communities, environment, and resources.

We recognize our responsibility to protect the environment and practice conservation as well as to provide a healthy, safe, and secure work environment.

Our policy is to proactively meet our global obligations and positively contribute to both the communities in which we operate and society at large.

Juniper Networks is committed to:

  • Compliance with applicable environmental, health, safety, and security laws and other requirements to meet customer and community needs and expectations.
  • Identification and assessment of opportunities to reduce workplace hazards and risks.
  • Fostering pollution prevention and the sustainable use of the earth's resources.
  • Promoting employee involvement at every level of the organization.
  • Monitoring performance and continually improving.
  • Providing the appropriate resources to honor our commitment.

Juniper strives to be a zero-waste company through recycling and reuse.

  • We use biodegradable cups in our employee break rooms and compostable utensils and paper products in our cafeterias.
  • We're currently piloting an onsite composting program at our Sunnyvale location to reduce the amount of paper and food waste from our cafeterias.
  • We have a comprehensive recycling program throughout the U.S. for bottles, cans, paper, batteries, CDs, and other items. We will be expanding this program globally where recycling facilities exist.
  • We will soon roll out a program to re-use electronic products, providing an inventory of all equipment not currently in use to all facilities worldwide to access.
  • Our janitorial program at our Sunnyvale headquarters uses "green" cleaning products and microfiber cleaning cloths, eliminating the need for paper cleaning products.

Juniper works with partners and employees to maintain a transparent supply chain.

At Juniper, we communicate our expectations to top-tier direct suppliers with whom we contract during the evaluation process. We let our suppliers know we have adopted the Electronics Industry Code of Conduct (EICC), and that we expect them to meet the requirements of the EICC, which include the principle of voluntary employment. We also share Juniper's Supplier Code of Conduct that includes supplier requirements related to labor standards. Suppliers sign an agreement with Juniper that 1) requires the supplier to adopt the EICC or a similar set of policies, and 2) incorporates Juniper's Supplier Code of Conduct. Supplier contracts also contain the provision that we expect our suppliers to comply with all of the relevant laws of the countries in which they do business.

Supplier verification is completed by Juniper, with assistance from a third party for routine background checks.

On occasion, we have audited companies in our supply chain, prioritizing our contract manufacturers and those companies with whom we have a high spend. In 2008, we began a process of supplier desk audits based on key principles of the EICC. We have continued that process, focused on our top-spend direct suppliers, with our most recent desk audits in early 2011. We also made on-site visits to four of our top contract manufacturers in 2011. At these recent audits, we reviewed supplier performance related to the EICC and Juniper's Supplier Code of Conduct, and we shared our observations and recommendations with the suppliers. The supplier audits described above were announced and conducted by Juniper.

At Juniper, we expect all of our employees, officers, and directors to meet the requirements of our Code of Conduct. The Code articulates Juniper's values and provides detail regarding compliance with relevant laws and regulations. It contains information and references to human rights, human trafficking, and other important ethical principles. Employees annually recertify their understanding of and compliance with Juniper's Code of Conduct.

Juniper employees with direct responsibility for supply chain management are trained in general risk mitigation. Additional awareness related to labor standards, including freely chosen employment, is currently being planned for implementation.

Juniper is driving change in the communities where we operate and with our suppliers.

  • At a regional level, we encourage the cities in which we have facilities to compost, so that wet waste can be diverted from landfills.
  • We partner with our paper supplier to ensure that recycled paper is available for order at all our facilities worldwide.
  • We've adopted the Electronics Industry Code of Conduct (EICC) internally, and are working with our contract manufacturers and suppliers worldwide to ensure their alignment with the code. The EICC outlines standards to ensure that working conditions in the electronics industry supply chain are safe, that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and that manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible.

Juniper works to reduce commute pollution.

Juniper locates our offices, whenever possible, near mass transit solutions and either provides or subsidizes mass transit passes for our workers. While each facility is different, the company has a variety of programs to encourage alternative modes of transport.

We offer a Bike-to-Work Reward Program that gives employees who bike to work lunch cards to the campus cafeteria, and a Guaranteed Ride Home Program that provides a ride home in the event of a qualified emergency for any employee who carpools or uses alternative transportation to get to work.

Juniper promotes a culture of telecommuting, leveraging our own technology to enable remote workers. Juniper's industry-leading SSL solution makes it easy and secure for employees to work from home and access the resources they need. Our technology also allows us to support home offices instead of having to operate very small offices. This reduces commute pollution and the energy associated with operating office space.

Juniper continues to evaluate our energy consumption and work to reduce it.

  • Over the last year, we've reduced our server footprint in our data centers by 30%, lowering power and cooling requirements and energy consumption.
  • We've virtualized many of our server and development labs, using an IBM "green" datacenter in Colorado and improving performance and energy efficiency.
  • Working with local energy companies, such as PG&E in the San Francisco Bay Area, we've reduced our load on the energy grid and supported the local community by reducing consumption significantly during times of increased energy need.
  • We've implemented daytime office cleaning services, reducing our energy use during nighttime hours and saving approximately 181,500 KWh per year.
  • By dimming or turning off hallway lighting in some of our Sunnyvale buildings during afternoon and weekend hours, we've eliminated the use of more than 52,200 KWh.

Juniper has invested in the infrastructure and systems to inventory and measure our carbon footprint on a global basis.

Our goal is to credibly account for our emissions and work to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our own operations, business travel, commute and supply chain. Though it's an exceedingly complex and multi-year process, we're measuring the energy efficiency of each of our products, as well as the carbon emissions inherent in their production and delivery to the customer.

By participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project, Juniper has been able to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. At our corporate headquarters facility in Sunnyvale, California, we expanded square footage by 22% and employee headcount by 15% from 2006 to 2007, yet kept direct and indirect emissions (electrical and natural gas) relatively stable, growing less than 3% (from 14,885 metric tons in 2006 to 15,223 in 2007). This means emissions per headcount went down by nearly one metric ton per person (from 6.91 in 2006 to 5.97 in 2007).
