National University of Singapore Migrates WAN to Juniper Networks

Juniper MX and M Series Routers Increase Capacity and Reliability While Enabling IPv6 Inter-networking with Other Academic Institutions

Singapore, April 6, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that the National University of Singapore (NUS) has migrated its wide area networking (WAN) infrastructure to robust routers running the Junos® operating system. Deployment of Juniper Networks' MX-Series Universal Edge Routers and M-Series Multiservice Edge Routers has enabled NUS to simplify its WAN while increasing capacity and reliability and also paving the way for the use of IPv6.

NUS has experienced a huge increase in IP network traffic in recent years, particularly in delay-sensitive voice and video payloads. Unlike most other universities, however, NUS operates an international network with points-of-presence in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and provides the Singapore Open Exchange (SOX), a carrier-neutral Internet exchange point for the local Internet community to exchange traffic freely.

"We saw simplification as one of the keys to addressing the increasing demands being placed on our wide area infrastructure. With the deployment of the new Juniper Networks routers, we have been able to consolidate a number of devices on our WAN while establishing another overseas point-of-presence," said Tommy Hor, Director of the NUS Computer Center."

"In our evaluation, Juniper's routers have proven to be very stable under high loads, which is essential for reliable multi-casting performance. These systems have been designed from the outset to handle IPv6. Junos not only simplifies network management, but also provides us with various advanced MPLS traffic engineering capabilities."

Juniper Networks MX480 Universal Edge Routers now form the NUS WAN GigaPOP. It is co-located with SOX members' peering points, connecting the NUS campus network to local Internet service providers, IPv6-enabled Research and Education partners, as well as NUS' points-of-presence in Hong Kong and Los Angeles, where Juniper Networks M10i Multiservice Edge Routers have been deployed.

"The National University of Singapore plays a key role in research and education and that is reflected in the demands placed on its WAN infrastructure," said Beni Sia, country manager for Juniper Networks Singapore. "Our solution, including migration consulting and on-going support, has created a far more robust, scalable and manageable platform which requires less power, cooling and rack space. As a result, NUS has been able to improve quality-of-service particularly for voice-over-IP and multicast video services with other universities in Singapore and overseas."

MPLS traffic engineering capabilities provided by Juniper WAN solutions give NUS the ability to accurately gauge and manage the type of traffic going through its POPs. This enables it to provide IPv4 and IPv6 peering services for research and education institutions in the Asia-Pacific region and North America. It is also able to apply load-balancing traffic across its local and international private leased circuits and support virtual private leased circuits to interconnect SOX peers at all NUS points-of-presence.
