The MX960 Universal Edge Router enables high performance, reliability and scale for service provider and enterprise applications. It provides 12 slots for high-density interfaces, including 10GE, 40GE and 100GE as well as legacy SONET/SDH, ATM and PDH connectivity, and also supports sophisticated timing and virtualization capabilities.
The MX960 shares a common set of power and cooling components with MX480 and MX240 platforms for cost effective sparing; and also shares routing/control and switching components, port, service and application concentrators, and a resilient, fully redundant architecture with all the chassis-based Universal Edge Routers, providing a consistent operations and service environment across the MX Series portfolio.

MPCs
Modular Port Concentrators (MPCs) are a set of next-generation advanced line modules for Juniper Networks® MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers that deliver the performance, services, and scalability that are critical to today's advanced Ethernet services edge and broadband edge networks. Designed for flexibility, MPCs introduce both the industry's highest capacity and modular 1GbE and 10GbE hardware to the MX Series portfolio. The MPC houses the packet forwarding engines that deliver up to 160 Gbps of comprehensive Layer 3 routing (IPv4 and IPv6), Layer 2 switching, inline services, and advanced hierarchical quality of service (H-QoS) per MX Series slot.
DPCs
Dense Port Concentrators (DPCs) provide multiple physical interfaces and Packet Forwarding Engines (PFE) on a single board that installs in a slot in the Juniper Networks MX Series Ethernet Services Routers. A DPC receives incoming packets from the network and sends outgoing packets to the network. The PFEs are equipped with purpose-built ASICs that perform packet processing and forwarding. Each PFE consists of one I-chip for Layer 3 processing and one Layer 2 network processor.
DPCE-X
Optimized for Ethernet switching, the DCPE-X extends JUNOS® Software to include traditional Layer 2 switching features, such as Spanning Tree, as well as more recent Ethernet standards developments including Operation, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM). The MX Series combined with the DPCE-X Layer 2 switching cards provide a wide range of MPLS and Ethernet functionality for cost-effective Layer 2 aggregation.
DPCE-R
The DPCE-R provides the same Layer 2 switching and MPLS features offered on the DPCE-X card. In addition it provides greater routing scalability (1 million routes as opposed to the DPCE-X's 32 K) and packet processing capabilities.
MX-FPC
MX-FPC modules accept up to two PICs commonly used with the M Series and T Series routers. These modules allow the MX Series to support non-Ethernet interfaces, and the PIC portability among M Series, T Series, and MX Series routers provides common sparing and investment protection.
MS-DPC
The Multiservices DPC significantly expands the flexibility of the MX Series by enabling a broad range of services and applications in a single DPC form factor that can also serve as an integral part of a security solution. Session border control (SBC) functions, intrusion detection and protection (IDP), deep packet inspection (DPI), stateful firewall, network address translation (NAT), flow monitoring, and anomaly detection can be layered simultaneously on each MS-DPC, creating a rich, scalable services plane.
