JUNIPER NETWORKS POWERS ADVANCED MEDICAL RESEARCH AT THE WALTER AND ELIZA HALL INSTITUTE
Data Center and Campus Solution Delivers Scalable Performance, Security and Low TCO
MELBOURNE, Australia, July 10, 2012 – Juniper Networks, the industry leader in network innovation, today announced that the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research has chosen a robust, scalable and secure networking solution running on Junos® to support its next decade of advanced research. Deployment of Juniper Networks® EX Series Ethernet Switches to power its data center and campus networks enables Australia's oldest medical research institute to expand its operations with little impact on network operating costs.
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is undergoing a major transformation with the development of a new building at its main Parkville site and the refurbishment of its existing building, doubling the building footprint and enabling the Institute to grow its medical research programs. The deployment of the new high-performance network is an integral part of this project, providing critical infrastructure for researchers in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, structural biology and medicinal chemistry.
News Highlights
- Juniper Networks EX8216 Ethernet Switches form a highly resilient network core, supporting directly-connected blade servers, top-of-rack data center access switches and a campus network over a 10 Gigabit per second Ethernet.
- Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet Switches have been deployed in the data center and office floor wiring closets, providing a high-density of Gigabit Ethernet ports to connect servers, workstations, IP phones and wireless access points.
- Groups of up to 10 EX4200 switches are linked together using Juniper’s unique Virtual Chassis technology, enabling them to be operated and managed as a single logical device.
- By simplifying the network switching architecture to two layers and eliminating the need for a distribution layer, the Juniper Networks solution reduces the Institute’s capital and operation costs while increasing performance.
- A cluster of Juniper Networks SRX3600 Services Gateways enforce security in the data center while also supporting wide area network connections to the Institute’s three remote sites and secure 10 Gigabit per second connections to research partners and the Internet.
- Juniper Networks SA4500 Series Gateways with Junos® Pulse Secure Access Service (SSL VPN) provide the Institute with a cost-effective, secure remote access and extranet VPN access solution from any standard Web browser.
- Deployment of Juniper Networks IC4500 systems with Junos Pulse Unified Access Control Service (UAC) allows the Institute to orchestrate centralized network access control policies via all enforcers in the network.
- Junos runs as the single operating system, controlling and orchestrating routing, switching, security and network services – with streamlined management from a single point via a web-based console – which significantly reduces operational complexity and cost while increasing reliability.

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute
“Research in life sciences is heavily dependent on information technology and working with very large data sets. Our previous network was more than six years old and based on 100Mb/s and 1Gb/s technologies. We needed to move to 10Gb/s technology in a highly available architecture to accommodate the growing demand whilst also introducing 802.1X throughout to provide greater security and administrative simplicity. Following an extensive technical evaluation of the available options we selected Juniper Networks to replace our entire network. Deciding factors included best-in-class performance, competitive pricing, Juniper’s Virtual Chassis capability and the compelling operational benefits of Junos software.”

“The work being carried out at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is at the leading edge of medical science so it is no coincidence that it now has a leading edge network to support its research. This is very much a showcase for the new network, with a simplified architecture delivering low-latency performance and multi-layered security that can scale in tandem and without compromise.”
