The Challenge
Service providers need a high performance, highly reliable edge network that cost-effectively scales to meet the extraordinary growth in subscribers, services, and traffic, driven by mobile devices, video, and bandwidth-hungry rich media content.
At the same time, service providers also need to streamline their edge networks and operations environment to maintain their service margins, but increasing edge network performance, reliability, and scale, while simplifying network operations is an extremely challenging task.
The Solution
Juniper Networks Universal Edge solution combines state-of-the-art hardware and advanced software to create a scalable, efficient, and cost effective, network edge.
At the heart of the Universal Edge is the MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router portfolio, which flexibly supports business, residential, mobile, metro-Ethernet, cable services, and data-center interconnect. The MX Series 3D includes innovative technology, that includes
- Junos Node Unifier, a virtual chassis feature that ensures network resiliency and simplifies management by extending a common control plane across multiple physical routers and switches
- The advanced Junos Trio chipset, which provides ‘3D’ scaling of bandwidth, subscribers, and services, to meet the demands of even the fastest growing markets.
In addition, the MX2020 today delivers up to 17.2 Tbps of full duplex system capacity, the highest single chassis capacity available today, and it is designed to scale to 40 Tbps in the future.
The Universal Edge is powered by Junos software, which runs on all Juniper Networks routing, switching and security platforms from access through core. Junos support includes a wide variety of routing protocols, L2/L3 VPN technologies, Seamless MPLS, and provides true carrier class network and service reliability and performance.
Junos is also the foundation for broadband subscriber management services and a suite of network optimization and monetization applications that are hosted on MX Series 3D Routers. These applications include Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN), Intelligent Load Balancing (ADC/SLB), DPI, IPS and Stateful Firewall, and Junos Content brings high-performance caching and content delivery capabilities to the Universal Edge solution.
Junos Space is a comprehensive Network Management solution that simplifies and automates management of the Universal Edge. It is also a critical component of our SDN strategy that provides a centralized management plane for a single point-of-contact into the network and a common platform for managing and creating customized management applications.
Junos Space consists of a network management platform for element management, and plug-n-play management applications for specific OAM services quickly, and a programmable SDK for network customization. Each of these components work together to deliver a unified network management and orchestration solution to help you more efficiently manage your network.
